Gold Star Ride by Jennifer Marino, USMC (Retired CH-46 pilot). Follow her 77 day journey across the country visiting Gold Star Families.
Day 8: Last night I made it up to Big Bear City, CA to visit Joe and Laurie Landaker, parents of 1stLt Jared M. Landaker, USMC. This visit held a personal connection for me that reaches back years before I began this ride. I flew with Jared several times when I was an instructor and he was a student pilot at HMM(T)-164, the CH-46E Fleet Replacement Squadron at Camp Pendleton. My memories of Jared from that time always make me laugh…he always seemed to have a smile of mischief on his face that made me question what he was up to. He was sometimes a bit cockier than was called for, but he was an exceptional aviator from the very start, and he took his flying responsibilities very seriously. He could have had his pick of aircraft to fly, and he chose the Phrog because of the community. It suited him well, and he loved the role of delivering Marines to places they needed to go. He valued the opportunity to bring weary or wounded warriors off the battlefield even more. Jared’s parents shared that he had a deep sense of conviction, and he was very patriotic.
After the September 11th terrorist attacks, Jared knew that he wanted to serve his country as a Marine. He and 6 other phenomenal Marines and Sailors gave their lives on February 7, 2007, in Al-Karmah, Iraq. They remain the Seven Stars of Morphine 12. Joe and Laurie and their family established the Seven Stars Foundation to honor these fallen heroes. Jared, your story and your legacy of service live on in those who love and miss you. You will never be forgotten.
